The flow I recommend to apply the dual pilgrim:

This article is for someone who would like to apply dual pilgrim in Japan (If you want to apply at Spain, I will tell you later.)

If you have completed both the Kumano Kodo and Camino de Santiago then you are a “Dual Pilgrim”. Then yes, you could apply the special greeting frim Japan. Most people are confused about the difference between application locations and the order in which to apply for the double pilgrimage. This article is for you.

1. Prepared the certification from Camino de Santiago, and completed the stamp list Kumano Kodo.

Camino de Santiago

  • at least the last 100 km on foot/horse
  • at least the last 200 km by bicycle

KUMANO KODO

  • Takijiri-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha on foot (~38 km)
  • Kumano Nachi Taisha to/from Kumano Hongu Taisha on foot (~30 km)
  • Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha on foot (~7 km) plus a visit to Kumano Hayatama Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha
  • Koyasan to Kumano Hongu Taisha on foot (~70 km)*** much dangerous!!!!!!

※ Only walking is allowed on the Kumano Kodo. No bicycles or horses.

2. Visit Wakayama Heritage Center, ask the staff for the application, fill all question in the form, wait for the certification by hand. Then the staff will ask for whether take photo theb publish on the homepage, the official website.

3. Take your dual pilgrim to Kumano Hongu Taisha office, 社務所, for the greeting especially in Japan, receive souvenir form Hongu Taisha office, then follow the staff to do drumming in front of the temple.
